A Shunem Woman

  Home

2 KINGS 4:9-10**SHE SAID TO HER HUSBAND, I KNOW THAT THIS MAN (ELISHA) WHO OFTEN COMES OUR WAY IS A HOLY MAN OF GOD. LET’S MAKE A SMALL ROOM ON THE ROOF AND PUT IN IT A BED AND A TABLE, A CHAIR AND A LAMP FOR HIM. THEN HE CAN STAY THERE WHENEVER HE COMES TO US.

WHY DID GOD PUT IT IN THE HEART OF A FOREIGNER TO PROVIDE FOOD AND A ROOM FOR ELISHA? A, GOD IS SHOWING HE LOVES ALL PEOPLE THAT LOVE HIM.

ELISHA WAS A PROTÉGÉ CHOSEN BY GOD TO SUCCEED ELIJAH AS PROPHET (1 KINGS 19:16). AS A FAITHFUL ATTENDANT, ELISHA, AS WELL AS 50 OTHER PROPHETS WITNESSED ELIJAH TAKEN UP TO HEAVEN IN A WHIRLWIND WITH A FLAMING CHARIOT AND HORSES (2 KINGS 2:11). ELISHA MINISTERED IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF HIS MASTER FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS AND PERFORMED MANY MIRACLES. THE MOST NOTEWORTHY WAS A PROMISED SON TO THE CHILDLESS SHUNEM WOMAN (2 KINGS 4:14-17. LATER, ELISHA RESTORED THE LIFE OF THE DEAD BOY.

WHEN THE BOY DIED ON THE LAP OF HIS MOTHER, SHE SEARCHED FOR THE MAN OF GOD. ** VERSE 25** SO SHE SET OUT AND CAME TO THE MAN OF GOD AT MOUNT CARMEL. WHEN HE SAW HER IN THE DISTANCE, THE MAN OF GOD SAID TO HIS SERVANT GEHQZI, "LOOK! THERE’S THE SHUNAMMITE! RUN TO MEET HER AND ASK HER, ARE YOU ALL RIGHT? IS YOU HUSBAND ALL RIGHT? IS YOUR CHILD ALL RIGHT"? "EVERYTHING IS ALL RIGHT," SHE SAID.

WHY DID SHE SAY EVERYTHING IS ALL RIGHT WHEN HER BOY JUST DIED? A. SHE WANTED TO TALK TO THE MASTER, NOT HIS SERVANT.

IN BITTER DISTRESS, THE WOMAN CLUTCHED THE FEET OF ELISHA. **VERSE 28** "DID I ASK FOR A SON, MY LORD?" SHE SAID. "DIDN’T I TELL YOU, DON’T RAISE MY HOPES?"

WHEN ELISHA’S DISCIPLE WAS INSTRUCTED TO RUN AHEAD AND LAY THE MAN OF GOD’S STAFF ON THE DEAD BOY, THE MOTHER DID NOT FOLLOW HIM AND SAID **VERSE 30** "AS SURELY AS THE LORD LIVES AND AS YOU LIVE, I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU." SO HE GOT UP AND FOLLOWED HER. **MEANWHILE, ELISHA’S DISCIPLE RETURNED AND SAID, "THE BOY HAS NOT AWAKENED!"

THESE WORDS MOTIVATED ELISHA TO RETURN TO THE HOME OF THE WELL-TO DO WOMAN, HE REMEMBERED THE SAME WORDS AND HIS OWN DISTRESS THE DAY ELIJAH WAS TAKEN TO HEAVEN. **2 KINGS 2:6**THEN ELIJAH SAID TO HIM, "STAY HERE, ELISHA, THE LORD HAS SENT ME TO THE JORDAN (RIVER) AND HE REPLIED, "AS SURELY AS THE LORD LIVES AND AS YOU LIVE, I WILL NOT LEAVE YOU, SO THE TWO OF THEM WALKED ON.

WHEN THE TWO OF THEM STOPPED AT THE JORDAN, ELIJAH STRUCK THE WATER AND THE WATER PARTED TO DRY PASSAGE. THIS OCCURRED ALSO WHEN THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL FIRST ENTERED INTO THE PROMISED LAND CARRYING THE ARK OF THE COVENANT (JOSHUA 3:15-16).

2 KINGS 2-9**WHEN THEY HAD CROSSED (JORDAN RIVER), ELIJAH SAID TO ELISHA. "TELL ME, WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU BEFORE I AM TAKEN FROM YOU?" LET ME INHERIT A DOUBLE PORTION OF YOUR SPIRIT, ELISHA REPLIED. **VERSE 11**AS THEY WERE WALKING ALONG AND TALKING TOGETHER, SUDDENLY A CHARIOT OF FIRE AND HORSES OF FIRE APPEARED AND SEPARATED THE TWO OF THEM, AND ELIJAH WENT UP TO HEAVEN IN A WHIRLWIND.

2 KINGS 4:32-33**WHEN ELISHA REACHED THE HOUSE, THERE WAS THE BOY LYING DEAD ON HIS COUCH. HE WENT IN, SHUT THE DOOR ON THE TWO OF THEM AND PRAYED TO THE LORD.

THE LORD ALWAYS HEARS US, BUT SOMETIMES HE WEIGHS ALL THE REPERCUSSIONS AND A REQUEST MAY NOT BE GRANTED QUICKLY OR EVEN IN THIS LIFETIME. MOST PEOPLE SELFISHLY WANT ALL THE GLORY AND DESIRES FOR THEMSELVES. MAY THE GLORY ALWAYS BE TO GOD! AFTER ELISHA STRETCHED OUT HIS BODY ON THE DEAD BOY, HIS LITTLE BODY GREW WARM, BUT HE DID NOT AWAKEN. **VERSE 35-37**ELISHA TURNED AWAY AND WALKED BACK AND FORTH IN THE ROOM AND THEN GOT ON THE BED AND STRECHED OUT UPON HIM ONCE MORE. THE BOY SNEEZED SEVEN TIMES AND OPENED HIS EYES. ELISHA SUMMONED GEHAZI AND SAID, "CALL THE SHUNAMMITE". AND HE DID. WHEN SHE CAME, HE SAID, "TAKE YOUR SON." SHE CAME IN, FELL AT HIS FEET AND BOWED TO THE GROUND. THEN SHE TOOK HER SON AND WENT OUT.

A COMING MISFORTUNE IS INDICATED BY THE SNEEZING OF THE BOY SEVEN TIMES. AS THE BOY GREW OLDER, HIS FAMILY LOST THEIR PROPERTY FOR SEVEN YEARS BECAUSE OF A SEVEN YEAR FAMINE DECREED BY THE LORD.

2 KINGS 8:1**NOW ELISHA HAD SAID TO THE WOMAN WHOSE SON HE HAD RESTORED TO LIFE, "GO AWAY WITH YOUR FAMILY AND STAY FOR A WHILE WHEREVER YOU CAN, BECAUSE THE LORD HAS DECREED A FAMINE IN THE LAND (AS PUNISHMENT FOR ISRAEL’S WICKEDNESS) THAT WILL LAST SEVEN YEARS. **AS AN OBEDIENT SERVANT OF THE LORD, SHE TOOK HER FAMILY TO THE LAND OF THE PHILISTINES FOR SEVEN YEARS. AT THE END OF SEVEN YEARS, SHE RETURNED AND WENT TO THE KING TO BEG FOR RETURN OF HER HOUSE AND LAND. NOT BY CHANCE, BUT BY THE GUIDANCE OF THE LORD GEHAZI WAS ALREADY THERE TO VERIFY TO THE KING THAT THIS WAS THE WOMAN AND HER SON THAT ELISHA RESTORED TO LIFE. **VERSE 6**THE KING ASKED THE WOMAN ABOUT IT, AND SHE TOLD HIM. THEN HE ASSIGNED AN OFFICIAL TO HER CASE AND SAID TO HIM, "GIVE BACK EVERYTHING THAT BELONGED TO HER, INCLUDING ALL THE INCOME FROM HER LAND FROM THE DAY SHE LEFT THE COUNTRY UNTIL NOW. **KNOW GOD, KNOW PEACE** GIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE LORD FOR EVERMORE**
