Count the Cost

Luke 9:62 **  But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

The Messiah was steadfastly traveling to Jerusalem with James and John, HIS two half brothers who were faithful disciples when these words were spoken.  As documented in John 7:5-10, HIS other (half) brothers did not believe in HIM and went on to the feast without the Messiah who had been fathered by the Spirit of God (Isaiah 7:14, Matthew 1:23).  These brothers only wanted to see the works (miracles) HE was doing. James and John were HIS true believing spiritual brothers. The purpose was to celebrate the last harvest Feast of Tabernacles commanded by God for all generations, meaning forever (Leviticus 23:41). This would be the last autumn celebration before being taken up to heaven after laying down HIS live as the only holy and pure Passover Lamb of God a few months later in the Passover feast.

The steadfast and direct route to Jerusalem was traveling through Samaritan territory where the Messiah intended to minister along the way. However, the pagan Samaritans hated the Jewish pilgrims because the Jews first hated them. Jews typically traveling to Jerusalem were not welcome and were denied lodging.  This reciprocation of hate has expanded into this age for all peoples of the world even among families, church and synagogue members. The hate of the world continues and increases because the God of hate (Satan) thrives on everyone different in religion, nationality, way of thinking and etcetera.

The next passages are from Luke 9: 51-56. When the people of the Samaritan town rejected Jesus and HIS disciples, James and John reacted with burning anger, saying: “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to consume them just as Elijah did?” But HE turned and rebuked them, and said: “You do not know what manner of spirit you are of (spirit of Satan). For the son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” And they went to another village. (This episode is often referred to as James and John ‘sons of thunder’** .They also did not taste death until they saw the Kingdom of God in the resurrection of Moses and Elijah in the transfiguration in Luke 9 28-36).

The spirit of Satan has twisted and diverted the furrows or trenches of the plow to divert or change the seeds of love planted and commanded by our Lord God (Ten Commandments). About 900 years before the transfiguration, the prophet Elijah followed the instructions of the Lord when King Ahaziah of Samaria turned his plow (belief) from God to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron (2 Kings 1-17). On two occasions, Elijah called fire to rain down and consume a captain and his fifty men. The third captain of fifty men in verse 14 appealed to Elijah, saying, “Look, fire has come down from heaven and burned up the first two captains of fifties with their fifties. But let my life now be precious in your sight”.  With pity their lives were temporarily spared with the hope they would turn their lives back to the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  With the same pity, the Lord temporarily spares the lives of many who humble themselves to:  “Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).  As most of this evil world progressively turns away from keeping the commandments of love, fire will also be rained down to consume the lives of most of mankind. The possibility of fire from Satan’s heaven by nuclear holocaust looms nearer.

John 7:37 **.On the last day, that great day of the feast (Tabernacles), Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirst, let him come to ME and drink. He who believes in ME, as the scripture has said, out of his heart will Flow Rivers of living water.”   Except for those believing in HIM, few understood this saying for the Holy Spirit was not yet given because Jesus (God’s holy sacrificial Lamb) had not been glorified.   The coming gift of living water in the new heaven and earth is in scripture by the Prophet Isaiah 55:1, saying, “Ho!  Everyone who thirst, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come; buy wine and milk without money and without price. ** Verse 6: Seek the Lord while HE may be found, call upon HIM while HE is near.  ** The free gift of living water is also prophesied in Revelation 21:6.    Visit:
