Deuteronomy 15:11 ** “For the poor will never cease from the land, therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in the land.’

Many centuries have passed since the Lord instructed Moses to write the words that the poor will never cease from the land. Jesus was likely thinking of this verse when He spoke these words in Matthew 26:11; Mark 14:7 and John 12:8. Our Creator God makes the rich as well as the poor, yet James 2:5 tell us that God has chosen the poor of the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom promised to those who love Him. We show out love by doing as commanded throughout the Bible. The Messiah, Y’shua Christ Jesus preached the words to bring good news to the poor given to Isaiah on his first message on Sabbath in His hometown of Nazareth. He said, “The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor……..” (Isaiah 61:1-2, Luke 4:18).

John 12:3 tells us those six days before Passover, a poor woman named Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, anointed Christ Jesus. She took an expensive spikenard (alabaster) jar filled with a very expensive perfume (a year’s wages) and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. Since Jesus was staying with Lazarus and his sisters in Bethany near Jerusalem just a few days before His triumphal entry. This family surely dreaded the looming tragedy of Jesus’ arrest. He had just raised Lazarus from the dead and already people were trying to put both of them back into the grave.  Feeling the weight of these coming distressing days, Mary poured out her heart and anointed the Lord of Life with all she had to give; an amazing year’s wages for the average laborer.

The complaint of Judas Iscariot, a thief who kept the money bag and who would later betray Him, still echoes for many people today within the churches. Most people cannot conceive the extravagance of this action of giving all. Mary, herself likely did not know the eternal worldwide significance of this gift. The value of this perfume represented her strong belief that Christ Jesus was the Messiah and she placed her Lord above all other values. Our first calling, when we accept Christ Jesus as our personal savior should be to give our life and our resources to God.  Gifts to the poor and needy are a mirror image of Mary’s extravagant offering. Matthew 25:31-46 tells us that most of this world is a goat destined for eternal death instead of the sheep of the Messiah, Y’shua Christ Jesus; destined for life eternal in the soon coming Kingdom of God.

In discussing the sheep and goats which is symbolic of mankind, Jesus stressed the love of God which should be a byproduct of loving others as your self. Most people place vague sentimentality of love for others who suffer from being poor. Real love in action must be expanded beyond family and close friends to those that are poor and needy, suffering and

Oppressed. When we place our life into action to care for these individuals, we are actually caring for our Creator God. Compassionate and merciful deeds are not the keys to the Kingdom of God; yet it truly shows our citizenship for the Kingdom has been confirmed.

In 2 Corinthians 6:9-10, Paul says, “…… dying, and behold we live; as chastened, and yet not killed; as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing all things”  ** When we open our heart and give it to the Messiah, Y’shua Christ Jesus we possess all things for we are immediately adopted into the family of God and our Passport has been stamped APPROVED FOR ENTRANCE INTO THE KINGDOM OF GOD FOREVER! Repent and give all to the King of Life!

Please don’t forget our Creator God and live as if this world is all there is! The harvest of winter is past, the summer will soon end and we are not saved! The bible speaks loud and clear, “. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? For whoever is ashamed of ME and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man (Messiah, Y’shua Christ Jesus) also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” (Mark 8:36 & 38).
